All I wanted to do was capture the closeness of this race and hopefully the "photo finish".... but when got home I laughed out loud when I realized I got something much better than that. The only horse behind in the race was indeed sticking his tongue out ! Not much of a gracious loser I guess :) Here's to the competitive nature we can all relate to.

I Heart Faces - "Hands"

I am not entering this image because of it's technical quality, but for it's sentimental one. These beautiful and wise hands belong to my 93 year old grandma Cora Lee. In this world there isn't a kinder, wiser, more beautiful woman. Though her hands have toiled picking cotton in the fields of the south and breaking switches for teaching her 5 children, they are still the embodiment of kindness and tenderness. These hands could make any baby stop crying simply with one soft touch. These are the hands of my hero.
I am not able to see my grandma as often as I would like because she lives in Tennessee, but when my daughter was a baby, I had to make a trip so my grandma could meet her. I admire my grandma more than words can ever say, and I have always loved her hands. While I was there, I wanted to capture all her years of experience and wisdom she carries in her hands. She and I have a very special tradition of playing "Mary Mack" each time we see each other. Even now that I am 30, I still sit on her lap and we playfully pat our hands to this little song. The result is laughter and nostalgia that I hope my children will someday have.

So to me, this is one of the most precious memories I could ever ask to have recorded. A "passing" if you will of the importance of my grandma, the life in her hands, and it passing to my daughter.

" I heart Kisses" - Photo Entry

Well I did it. I have wanted to enter a photo contest for some time now, and for some reason haven't pulled the trigger. This weeks challenge on I heart Faces was about kissing. A picture from my one and only wedding popped into my head to enter. This was a simple backyard wedding, and these cute little frogs hopping around in the grass where the ceremony was held inspired this idea. So here goes. Kaleigh is another one of our long time volleyball players. She is a spitfire and a coaches dream. The bigger the game, the better she played. Not the one you would pick out to be afraid of in warmups, but she would quickly show you in a game why she was in fact the one to fear. SHe is going to Colgate to play volleyball. Again, there are sharpness issues, but I am sure that is just the way I am adding them to the blog. They are sharp in my computer. : )

She will be playing volleyball on scholarship this fall for University of North Carolina....thats right. UNC baby ! The countdown begins

Well, it has almost been a year since I decided to trade in my point and shoot and get serious. May of last year my dad and I were talking about what we could do for a new adventure. Perhaps a new career path we could love and enjoy doing. After weeks of conversations we decided that photography was the path we were going to take. After all, I was always taking pictures of Jordyn...how hard could it be ? I am very calculated and my dad is...well...more emotional. While I was spending hours upon hours in "paralysis of analysis" looking for the best camera for the best price, my dad was out buying the best camera for the best price. There we had it, 2 camera's 4 lenses and no idea what to do with either one of them. Our first venture was a trip to Washington to visit my mom. This trip was spent learning, that we basically knew nothing. Including anything at all about how to use a fancy camera. We did however point it at a few things, and download the images into my moms computer. We then used Picassa to edit them, or so we called it at the time. Here are a few from our "experiment" in Ashlyn, Oregon. ( Clearly I thought is was cool that I could blur and saturate whatever I wanted )

The next few months were spent learning the very basics. Literally - what is aperture ? How do you focus ? What is exposure ? Absolutely no knowledge other than my little Nikon point and shoot. I read the camera manual, and 90% of it was a waste of time, because it may as well have been in Russian. I did not understand any of it. This is where Cynthia comes in. Who is Cynthia you ask ? She is the reason I didn't throw in the towel. A wonderfully gifted photographer, who just so happened to be the mother of one of our ( Me and Jeff ) current volleyball players. What a treat ! She very patiently answered what must have been an exausting amount of questions well below her level. She encouraged me to just shoot. Go out, pick a subject, and shoot it. Change your settings, see what works and what doesn't. So, that is what I did over the next few months. I had a 3 year old and a new baby at the time, so progress was slow to say the least. But what better subjects than my kids. So, they become my practice. Picassa was all I had at the time, and boy did I ever use every ounce of it : ) Here are a few. ( ughhhh )

It was in August that I decided that if I was going to do this, I needed to actually get on the horse and start to ride it. I got a website, a license, a name....you get the picture. Now all that was left was to get someone to shoot other than my kids. Who better than someone from my team. I asked Cora, whom I had the longest relationship with of the group, if I could take their senior pictures...for practice. She said yes. That is when the panic set in. I quickly called a few of my friends for a last minute trial run. Tanya, a good friend, graciously brought over her boys and let me snap a few, and my BF Ali, who had a baby boy just 3 days after my Kami did the same. She even let me take a few of her. ( Here are a few of those )

Finally, August 18th came. The day I consider my official start date. Cora was dressed and ready for her senior pictures. I would have been freaking out if Cynthia hadn't offered to come along and help me with a few things. What a God send. Several hours, outfit changes, and tips from Cynthia later...my first official photo shoot was in the books. Now it was time to edit those suckers. You guessed it, with Picassa. The website and all the other fee's left me a few cents short of Photoshop. As if I would have the time or mental capacity to learn it anyways.

It is late, and this was a VERY long post...so up next...... a few from the "debut" photo shoot of Cora. After that, a re-cap of the highlights this first year has had to offer. Come back soon!!!

Beautiful Mama

This is my friend Tanya. We have know each other now for about, wow, 12 years. I met her when I came to Sac State to play volleyball. She was on my team and lived in the apartments next to me. SHe is the sweetest person and has the most incredible personality. Doesn't she look beautiful pregnant ? Here are a few. ( Her sons Luke and Kristopher are in a few too )

By the way: She has 2 boys, and is pregnant with her first girl !!!

The Stylish Adams Family

This is one of my favorite families in the world. The Adams Family. They are all so beautiful and kind. They were so much fun to shoot because they were up for anything, and they were all so natural in from of the camera. Here are a few of my favorites. Here are a few from earlier in the year of my other daughter, Kamryn. These were for her first birthday. Kami did so good, although it IS hard to take pictures of your own kids. Not to mention for some reason Kami just didn't seem to understand when I asked her to "turn her head to the right just a pinch. " :) I hope you enjoy these. Again, as a mom, I sure do. I've got to start somewhere...Welcome to my blog.

Since my journey in photography began less than a year ago, I have used other photographer's blogs as educational tools. It is so fun and inspiring to go daily to the blogs of other photographers with such talent and ability, and years of priceless experience. I feel like I get to be a "fly on the wall" of some of the best photographers in the country. I believe in the saying " garbage in, garbage out". With that in mind, looking at poorly constructed images day in and day out only breeds that level in my work. If instead I look at the best photographers, and their awesome works of art, that is instead what I train my mind to achieve.

Now, I realize that this is a pathetic excuse for a blog, but I just couldn't get myself to put in the time and money for a high end professional looking blog, with NO ONE TO SEE IT. So, if this blog becomes a must see, I will upgrade. Until then, I will use it to serve it's purpose...as motivation and for education. Motivation, because I can't very well have a blog without regular pictures and updates, so I will have to work to get sessions. Education because as I post my work, I open it up for discussion. For anyone that visits, and for myself. Please feel free to leave candid but respectful comments on the technical, aesthetic, and emotional components of any images I post. I welcome any comments, good or constructive, that any visitor of this blog would like to share. I hope to learn a lot from everyone that visits, and in turn hope that visitors can learn something as well. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you ! Let's chat !

To start...A question. How can I get my logo on my header, centered, and in the colors it was created ? I see blogs all the time with custom headers. How do I do that ?
